Kevin Hollinrake on the Floods and what the government is doing

I just wanted to update you and the Parish Council regarding the current situation on flooding and the work that the Government is doing to help.

For every home or business directly affected, flooding has devastating consequences that will be felt for many months to come. Our thoughts are with all those affected, inside and outside the constituency. The Government has announced an extension of the package of financial support and I would be very happy to help anyone within Thirsk and Malton constituency to make sure they receive any available compensation.

We are very grateful to the emergency services, our armed forces, local authorities and the Environment Agency for working round the clock to minimise the impact of the floods. There has been a huge effort to help people deal with the consequences of these recent unprecedented levels of rain.

Conversations have been held with Liz Truss, Secretary of State for Environment, the Chief Executive of the Environment Agency and Greg Clark, Secretary of State for Communities to ensure that the best possible support for North Yorkshire is in place should there be further flooding this week.

The Government has held a COBR meeting every day since Christmas Day to coordinate the response of all tiers of government and relevant agencies and it has boosted the number of troops currently deployed on the ground from 300 to 500 with a further 1,000 on standby.

There are still severe flood warnings in place with further rain expected on Wednesday and the Environment Agency will continue to work closely with local authorities, the emergency services and the military. It has teams out on the ground checking flood defences, clearing blockages in watercourses, monitoring river levels and issuing flood warnings where necessary. Please check the following site for the latest real-time warnings from the Agency: .

I am closely in touch with all relevant organisations and will help ensure they have everything they need to keep people across Thirsk & Malton constituency safe.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is any way in which I may be of assistance.

Kind regards
